Madrid announced the signing on their official website on Tuesday afternoon with Werder also confirming the deal. Bild quotes the German club's sporting director Klaus Allofs as saying: "We respect Mesut's wish to go now and take the next step in his career."
Mesut Oezil Date of Birth: 15 Oct 1988 Place of Birth: Gelsenkirchen, Germany Nationality: German Height: 182cm Position: Attacking Midfielder Ex-Clubs: Schalke, Werder Bremen |
Earlier on Tuesday, the 21-year-old's father confirmed that they had agreed personal terms with Madrid, and Allofs later threatened that if Madrid wanted to sign Oezil, then they must do so before Wednesday or else they would include the Germany star in their squad for the Champions League first leg play-off match against Sampdoria.
Oezil has been linked with a move to the Spanish capital since the end of the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, in which he helped Germany reach the semi-finals. He had just one year left on his contract with Werder and could have signed for a new club for free at the end of the 2010-11 season.
Although neither Madrid nor Werder disclosed any information about the transfer fee, reports in Spain believe that Los Blancos will pay €15 million to the German outfit.
Oezil's contract with Werder was due to expire in 30 June 2011 and he would've been allowed to negotiate a free transfer with other clubs during the January transfer window.
