Week 3: Best XI

Here is the best XI of the weekend in a 4-3-3 formation, according to Goal.com UK...

Goalkeeper: Simon Mignolet (Sunderland)

In what was a hard call between ‘keepers who excelled themselves this weekend, notably Wigan's Ali Al Habsi and Aston Villa’s Brad Friedel, it is Sunderland’s 22-year-old stopper who don’s the gloves, after a superb performance to keep Manchester City at bay; including a wonder save to deny Emmanuel Adebayor.

Left-back: Ahmed Elmohamady (Sunderland)

The second Sunderland player to make our side is Egyptian Ahmed El Mohamady. The right-back had who tormented Joleon Lescott and James Milner at the Stadium of Light with his attacking bursts down the flank, and looked resolute when defending his goal.

Centre-back: John Terry (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s captain and defensive colossus not only helped his side record another clean sheet at the weekend, but his marauding run through the Stoke midfield led to the Blues’ opening goal, after Terry picked-out Florent Malouda with a beautifully weighted pass.

Centre-back: Chris Samba (Blackburn Rovers)

The Congolese rock in the heart of Blackburn’s defence had another dominating display, despite defeat. Like Terry, Samba played a pivotal role in attack. After winning the ball in his half, he moved forwarded before executing a drilled through-ball to El Hadj Diouf, who in turn set-up Mame Diouf to tap home.

Right-back: Luke Young (Aston Villa)

A forgotten man under Martin O’Neill, the former Spurs trainee and Charlton man showed the type of composed finishing which teammate Emile Heskey could learn from, collecting the ball from Ashley Young before elegantly clipping it past the onrushing Tim Howard.

Right-midfield: Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

Another impressive display from the man omitted by Fabio Capello’s disastrous World Cup squad. Walcott has seemed a totally different player so far this season to one who struggled to impress last campaign, and his goal against Blackburn demonstrated his finishing guile again.

Centre-midfield: Andrey Arshavin (Arsenal)

A class act, no two ways about it. The Russian was always one step ahead of the rest on Saturday, and capped a brilliant display, which included an assist for Walcott’s opener, with a fine finish of his own to win the match.

Left-midfield: Nani (Manchester United)

Nani is seemingly blossoming into the player Sir Alex Ferguson hoped this season, and scored his second goal in as many games at the weekend. West Ham couldn’t handle the Portugal star’s pace and creativity on Saturday, and he justifiably finds himself in our eleven.

Forward: Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United)

Sulky or misunderstood, sublime or overrated, Dimitar Berbatov’s start to season is seeing his doubters drop like flies, as the Bulgarian recaptures the form which wowed Premier League fans from his Tottenham days. A stunning finish capped United’s dominating win.

Forward: Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

The Spaniard is back to doing what he does best; scoring goals. Torres seemed alien to his misfiring form as he put West Brom to the sword with an emphatically taken half volley on Sunday, handing Roy Hodgson his first Premier League victory as Liverpool manager.

Forward: Mame Diouf (Blackburn Rovers)

In what proved a toss-up between Sylvain Ebanks-Blake and the Blackburn man, it is the on-loan Manchester United striker who makes the cut. Diouf’s finish against Arsenal may have been simple, but his clinical movement in the build-up showed maturity beyond his years.
